Using foreknowledge and their usual survival skills, Claire doctors the hurts and Jamie avenges the wrongs. James's performance brings out the adventurer in the listener. Some pops and skips are audible throughout, adding charm to the narration and the ever complicated plots. This story vibrates with the energy of an America seeking its freedom and the battles that ensue, philosophically and physically, throughout this tumultuous period. M.B.K. Time-travel, romance, and historical fiction combine to bring to life 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century time-traveling wife, Claire. In this adventure, it is 1772, and the American Colonies are at odds with King George III and what they perceive as oppressive British rule. Violence has already appeared in the North Carolina backwoods where they live, with cabins being burned to the ground. Jamie is a Loyalist who is asked to safeguard the colony for his King. The governor begs Jamie to try to unite the people in loyalty to the Crown and thus restore peace in North Carolina. What happens to Jamie and Claire and the lives that intertwine with theirs is an exciting adventure through a tumultuous time where traitors are heroes and supporters are outcasts. Davina Porter does an excellent job as narrator, spanning characters with ease and skill. Gabaldon's fans will not be disappointed by this last installment. The intensely loyal fans of the Outlander series will devour this sixth installment. Diana Gabaldon delivers both an exciting plot and lovely fine detail; reader Davina Porter provides sensational narration. It's a relief to hear Jamie Fraser's Scottish and Gaelic dialogue, rather than struggle with mental pronunciation. Porter shines in Claire Fraser's chapters of first-person narrative, portraying a warm and wise middle-aged beauty with steely determination and courage--an unusual combination in the eighteenth century, but not in her native twentieth century. As Jamie strives to maintain peace in his North Carolina settlement, he tries to ignore Claire's knowledge that the American Revolution is about to begin, and he must choose sides. N.M.C.
