About the Author-
Nació en Voorburg, Holanda, en 1848. Comenzó sus estudios de derecho en Leiden, pero al morir su padre abandonó la universidad. Indeciso entre la música, el dibujo y la literatura, optó por empezar su carrera de escritor y también se decidió a viajar. Fundó un círculo literario con unos amigos de La Haya (Quatuor), en cuya revista aparecieron sus primeros escritos. Publicó poesía, novelas y obras de teatro, algunas de las cuales fueron representadas en la compañía teatral que contribuyó a fundar. Aunque fue considerado uno de los precursores de las tendencias naturalistas que impregnaron la literatura holandesa de 1880, prefirió mantenerse al margen de todo movimiento. En palabras de J. M. Coetzee, «sus verdaderas simpatías residen junto a la generación más antigua de realistas europeos, en particular Flaubert y Turguénev». Radicado en Baden después de la primera guerra mundial, murió en Suiza en 1923.
