במרכז הסיפור מסע אל מסתרי נפשו של אהרן גריידינג, סופר יהודי־פולני צעיר, אשר בורח בשנות השלושים של המאה העשרים מהאיום הקיומי המרחף עליו בארצו, אך אינו מוצא אחיזה בעולם החדש, באמריקה, אליה הגיע אחרי תלאות רבות.
בדרכו העסיסית ומלאת הכנות, מיטיב בשביס־זינגר להתחקות אחר משבריו ומעמסותיו של הסופר הצעיר, בעודו מתחבט בין דחפים יצריים שמניעים אותו, ובין שאלות רגשיות ומוסריות שאין מהן מנוס.
