העדות הזאת, שפורסמה ב־1946 בכתב העת המדעי "מינרווה מדיקה", חנכה את מפעלו של פרימו לוי כעֵד, כסופֵר וכמתעֵד־מנתֵח של תופעת מחנות ההשמדה. בארבעת העשורים שבאו לאחר פרסומה של העדות הזאת, לוי לא חדל לספר בדרכים שונות על מה שעבר עליו במחנה. טקסטים שראשיתם בחקירותיו הבוסריות על גורל עמיתיו לגירוש, והמשכם בתצהירי עדות במשפט אייכמן, במאמר "מכתב לבת של פשיסט שרוצה לדעת את האמת", ובמאמרים שפורסמו בעיתונים ובכתבי עת מקצועיים.
כך היה אושוויץ הוא פסיפס של זיכרונות ומחשבות ביקורתיות, שערכם ההיסטורי והאנושי לא יסולא בפז. זהו אוסף של עדויות, תחקירים ומחשבות מעמיקות, שמציגים לקורא את פרימו לוי כפי שלא הוצג מעולם.
"לא, עלמתי, אין דרך לערער על אמיתוֹת המראות הללו. הדברים האלה אכן קרו, וכך הם קרו: לא לפני מאות שנים, לא בארצות רחוקות... מי שמטיל ספק בכך, שייסע ברכבת ויבקר במה שנותר מהמקומות העצובים הללו. למעשה אין אפילו צורך בכך: כאן, בעירנו שלנו, ישנם עשרות עדי ראייה למעשים האלה; ויש אלפים (נשים, ילדים: ילדים!) שקִצם היה באותן ערימות של גיבובי עצמות, והם מעידים בעצם היעדרם, בחלל שהותירו אחרי לכתם, על המעשים הללו."
