Take a luscious dip into this novel with narrator Jayme Mattler. Her distinctive voice with its thick timbre and snarky Valley Girl tone is appropriate for edgy heroine Darcy Barrett. Darcy has a history of burning bridges--she missed her chance with childhood friend Tom Valeska and had a knock-down-drag-out fight with her twin, Jamie. Now her stars are realigning as Tom renovates her grandmother's cottage with input from Jamie. Darcy has no verbal filters, and Mattler owns her take-chances personality with a wistful narration that makes listeners love Darcy, flaws and all. It's sometimes hard to tell when Darcy is speaking out loud versus thinking, but the yearning romance that brings Tom and Darcy together is perfectly realized and worth the listen. Darcy is only too happy to spend her days side-by-side with Tom as they tackle the renovations, and sparks fly as their long-suppressed attraction proves impossible to ignore. Complicating the matter are their individual relationships with Jamie, Darcy's history of fleeing commitment, and Tom's insecurity about his role within the Barrett family. Thorne (The Hating Game, 2016) has crafted a romance that is equal parts funny, heartfelt, and steamy and adeptly balances Darcy's fledgling romance with Tom, her fraught relationship with her twin, and her stalled career as a photographer. Darcy is an appealingly flawed heroine whose bawdy internal monologue will have readers laughing and swooning right along with her.
